The advantage of work experience before the MBA

While a number of business schools in India and across the Asia Pacific region will still accept students straight after their first degree, a growing proportion of top MBA programmes around the world insist on a significant level of hands-on experience in the workplace. Melbourne Business School, Australia and Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management, USA, for example, look for a minimum of two years professional experience. IE - Instituto de Empresa, Spain and Cass Business School, UK, specify three years, while at Ashridge, UK, the minimum specification is five years previous work experience.

One of the main reasons schools now insist on this level of experience, is the expressed preference of recruiters for individuals who can ‘hit the ground running’, as soon as they graduate from an MBA programme. According to the latest TopMBA.com research from the organisers of the QS World MBA Tour, which surveyed more than 500 employers in more than 30 countries, over 50% of potential employees of MBAs look for candidates with at least a year’s prior work experience. Only around 8% of organisations are willing to look at individuals who have clocked up less than a year’s experience before embarking on their MBA studies.

However, this pressure from recruiters is only part of the reason behind the drive for experienced students. Sandeep Gupta worked for major companies such as Cadbury Schweppes and Siemens before studying at Cranfield School of Management, UK. He believes prior work experience plays a key part in getting the most out of the MBA experience: “Sitting in the classroom, during a case study discussion, it’s easy to identify with the characters involved because, more often than not, you can see a similarity between what you have experienced in the past and what the case study depicts.” He continues, “However, since you are now sitting outside the workplace, you can see the situation with a more neutral perspective and can identify who could have done what to produce a different outcome. There’s also an element of glamour and awe associated with words such as ‘vision’, ‘strategy’ and the like, which are used liberally on an MBA programme. These words have little meaning unless you can fit them into the bigger picture. And the only way you can do that is through prior practical experience.”

Sandeep Gupta’s view is shared by another Indian MBA, Rajesh Kothari, who studied at IESE, Spain after six years working in the financial services sector at home. “I found my work experience was invaluable to me on the programme. Making a real contribution to classes is extremely important – this most certainly isn’t the sort of study where you just politely sit and listen. When you want to make a point in class it definitely helps if you can draw upon previous experience and if you don’t have it, it really shows. The case study approach offers a very practical form of learning and the ability to draw upon six years in the workplace was a major bonus.”

Students get the lowdown on studying abroad

NEW DELHI: In a day and age when increasing number of countries across the globe and individual foreign institutes are wooing Indian students with gusto, no discussion on life beyond Delhi University (DU) can probably be complete without shedding some light on the process of acquiring a foreign degree. The last session of the second day's proceedings at the Career Guidance and Education Seminar, organised by The Times of India, was thus devoted to the hows and wheres of studying abroad, with representatives of the Canadian Education Centre (CEC), International Development Programme (IDP), Australia and the United States Education Foundation in India (USEFI), talking about the process and clearing students' doubts. "Commitment, planning and research are the cornerstones of a successful stint in a US university," said Luna Das of USEFI. She talked about liberal arts as a viable option for those looking at overall competency and clearing the oft-made mistake of confusing it with the fine arts. "TOEFL, SAT, GRE and GMAT are some of the tests you need to appear for, depending on what you plan to study. This year onwards TOEFL has become an internet-based test that integrates the speaking test also. It is also important to look beyond just the ivy league," Das stressed. For Australia and Canada, the English test changes to IELTS, though the latter also accepts TOEFL. Amit Malhotra of IDP talked about the wide range of courses available in Australian universities, but with a rider. "Not all universities are good in all areas, so choose judiciously," he said. The best part of Canadian education said Maria Mathai of CEC is that it is cheaper than in other countries and the degrees are recognised all over the globe. Talking about the high-quality research in Canadian universities, she said: "A common example of the kind of products that come from research is the Blackberry that was developed by a group of students and is now used around the world. There are liberal earn-while-you-learn options that can make financial aspects much easier."

Not so distant- Foreign Education

Ashna Kukreja, a student from Delhi’s GD Goenka school, did decently well in her 12th standard board exams but not good enough to get a course and a college of her choice in Delhi University. She turned her attention abroad with the help of a foreign education agent and Rs 12 lakh fee. Ashna is now studying business administration in United Kingdom. Education agents have undoubtedly made the route to an international education rather easy some would say too easy from doing your research to fixing interviews and even writing your statement of purpose. Today more than your marks, agents are proving to be the big ticket to degree abroad. An office in Delhi receives hundreds of students a week, all you have to do is walk in and specify the country and course of your choice. Even consultants helping you get admission into a foreign university admit that their criterion for taking on a student is rather low. They say it is easier to get admission abroad than to a good college in India. “We have a certain percentage. Student should be at least 55% to get good university and he should be with good TOEFL/IELTS score,” said Monica Sarang, Education Consultant. “I had tried in Delhi and given some entrance tests but marks required were too high, on the other hand a person came from Cardiff University and interviewed me. He saw my overall personality, that’s what matters to them,” said a student. Most agents are affiliated to foreign universities in some way or the other. While some charge students a fixed fee others provide free help and take a ten to fifteen percent cut of the tuition fee for each student they send to a University. But what’s common among all of them is the amount of handholding they provide to a student from preparing a statement of purpose (SOP), to writing, or as they say editing a student’s essay which forms the basis of their admission. “They helped me write my SOP, I didn’t know anything, they told me everything, which university is good for me, which is not,” said student Manish Bansal. Foreign universities too are more than happy to admit these students. For them international students are the most lucrative source of money. An average college in England or US charges a foreign student double to 6 times the tuition fee of its domestic student. Little wonder the number of Indians studying abroad is increasing. The number of Indian students enrolled in American colleges is up by 10, 000 students every year. Currently standing at almost 80,000. In UK, in 2002, the number of visas issued to Indian students almost doubled in span of one year. Rich kids with an average report card never had it this good with admission in Indian colleges becoming more and more competitive every year. The trend of falling back on a foreign university as a second option is only becoming stronger.

Russia medical, engineering varsities beckon Indian students

Russia medical, engineering varsities beckon Indian students -Caste & creed no consideration; just be there first.

Kolkata, June 23: One of the best infrastructure and research facilities in the world, low course fees and friendly people. The Russian alternative is proving to be alluring for Indian students, what with the reservation dragon rearing its head again and course fees for medical and engineering courses moving up for those lucky to get past the reservations. The International Foundation for Studies & Culture (IFSC), affiliated to the cultural department of the embassy of the Russian Federation in India, is the premier organisation for routing students to Russia for higher studies. Last year, it attracted nearly 1,600 Indian students wanting to study engineering and medicine, with over 175 from the eastern region alone. This year they hope to top the number.

Here to address students, Ashish Sonde, director of the IFSC, says: “The degree provided by the Russian universities is recognised by the Medical Council of India and is therefore a safe bet for students.” A medical course at the graduate level spans six years and at the post graduate level, two years. The fees are very low compared to levels in other universities in the US, UK and Australia. “The Government of Russia subsidises education heavily, which is why it is pocket-friendly for most middle class households of India,” Sonde said. The IFSC has tied up with Oriental Bank of Commerce and Saraswat bank to fund students going to Russia on a priority basis. Competition in South East Asia for the 450 - 500 available seats is high but it is on a first-come first-served basis. Aspiring students do not have to clear any language test such as TOEFL that is imposed by US universities. All they need is a 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry and biology.

The IFSC recommends three universities for medicine - the Ryazan State IP University, Peoples Friendship University and St Petersburg State Paediatric Medical Academy. Ryazan is the only institute offering PG courses in the English medium. Sonde clarified that the Russian language is a part of the curriculum and therefore does not prove to be a problem for the students. The IFSC takes complete care of the students while they are in Russia and even guides them in the admission procedure and emigration matters - arranges their visa and foreign currency.

“From Mumbai airport to the Moscow airport and beyond, we are with the students helping them settle in,” Sonde said. Vorontsova Evgenia and Aliaskhab Nutsalov from the Russian Asian Centre for University Services, which promotes Russian education and helps international students in Russia, were also present at the seminar. They told Newsline that they were looking to increase the number of students from India, a country with whom cultural ties date back to the erstwhile USSR. Evgenia debunked talk about Russia being too cold or that Indian food is not available in Russia. She said the Russian public was enthusiastic to meet more students from India, the land of their favourite cinema stars such as Salman Khan. For Indian medical students, the preferred fields in Russian universities are medicine, orthopaedics, oncology, general surgery and paediatrics. For budding engineers, aeronautics and robotics are the big draws.

International students drawn to Swedish master's programmes in IT

Blekinge Institute of Technology expects to see a doubling of its foreign student population this year, reports NyTeknik, a Swedish IT publication. Last year, 200 foreign students attended the university college; this year, around 400 are expected.

These figures represent a growing trend - foreign students are increasingly attracted to English-language master’s programmes in Sweden, especially technology oriented ones that Swedish students themselves often pass over.

Tomas Johansson, Blekinge Institute of Technology's head of the student office, told NyTeknik that the policy of attracting more foreign students is deliberate, and that as the number of available places at English-language programmes has increased, so have the numbers of foreign students. “They are very interested in electronics and IT, which Swedish students often pass over,” Johansson said.

Some of the most popular countries of origin for foreign students at Blekinge are Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China and Nigeria. The presence of these students makes it possible to fill all the available spots, according to Johansson. The situation is similar at other universities NyTeknik talked to. The IT University of Göteborg is expecting 70 students this year. At Mid Sweden University, around 100 students will attend the institution’s 4 English-language programmes. Currently, there are no fees for foreign students, though a proposal is afoot that would introduce fees for students from outside the EU, possibly from 2008 onwards.
According to Anders Flodström, head of the Royal Institute of Technology, the switch to fees is inevitable if Swedish universities want to remain competitive internationally. His only worry is that fees will be introduced too soon, before new scholarships can be introduced to continue to attract bright students from outside the EU.

“We’ll need better marketing in the future,” Flodström told NyTeknik, because there is little doubt that one of the reasons for Sweden’s popularity as a study destination for foreign students is the current lack of fees.

Some wise advice on education

It’s that time of the year again. Time to chase The Great Indian Dream: The Foreign Degree. Universities abroad receive thousands of applications from all over the world. Students prefer to apply to several colleges at once and the procedure can get very confusing. Enter the middleman: educational consultant agencies. The agencies complete and send the students’ paperwork to the universities and the universities simply sift through and make their selections. Other than the British Council and the United States Educational Foundation India (USEFI), Mumbai provides several options to its students.Edwise has two separate centres for UK colleges and US colleges. Many students are unsure of their course, reveals Tejal, a student counsellor. They are given the required information and invited to various seminars. Besides attending the university fairs that occur in February and November every year, Edwise organises in-house interviews for its students. These facilities are available for the foundation, under-graduate and post-graduate courses.EduWorld provides the same in addition to coaching classes for entrance examinations. Besides VISA counselling they guide their students on issues such as student insurance, foreign exchange, bank loans, travel bookings and even airport pick-ups. Manoj, student counsellor, says that it offers guidance on everything from certificate and diploma courses to under-graduate and post-graduate courses from over 200 colleges and universities across the globe: US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Italy; on the cards is a collaboration with New Zealand institutes. IDP Education Australia has branches in 25 countries. Most of their students know what they are looking for, says assistant manager Laurence, and in-house interviews are held through the year. The bi-annual Australian Interview Programme is one where students are invited to come and talk with representatives of Australian colleges. Keeping in mind that the college year begins either in January or July, the fairs are timed for either November or March at hotels like the Hilton or the Taj. Even though they do not have coaching classes they do have the facilities for conducting the IELTS for students.Southern Seas Education is registered under the Australian Representative India body. They have a pre-departure orientation programme where the students are prepared for their entry into a new country.

STUDY IN AUSTRALIA

Complete List of Universities (Australia)
Cost of Education in Australia
Aid/Scholarships in Australia
Australian Visa
Study Abroad in Europe/Australia
About Australia
Every month on average about 6,000 men, women and children Permanently immigrate to Australia to begin a new and prosperous life. On average another 120,000 people every month receive a Temporary Visa and are able to start a business or enjoy a working holiday in Australia. And 111,000 more are granted a Study Visa and learn highly paid skills and professions that are urgently needed here. When you have completed a 12 month study course in Australia you can also apply here for a Graduate Student Permanent Visa. The cost of applying for a Permanent Visa is between AUD$1,000 and AUD$4,500(Approx). If you fail the Australian Government Points Test for gaining entry you lose your entire application fee. Once you start studying, you can apply for work rights and are eligible to work twenty hours per week when school is in session and forty hours per week during vacations. You may also be eligible for student loans at some Australian universities. The reasons, for Australia being the first choice destination of these students are many, the most common being the fact it is an English speaking friendly country providing globally recognized quality education at considerably a lesser cost than UK and USA. Another attractive feature for students going from abroad for higher studies in Australia is the protection of their interests provided by the government through Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act. The act ensures protection of international students in matters such as tuition fees and provides for grievances to be addressed and service to be guaranteed all such educational institutions

Admission Tests
For entry into any course falling under `higher education’ category a student is required to have a score of six or more on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) conducted by British Council. For Vocational Studies and Training courses as well as for secondary school courses an overall score between 5-6 is required, depending upon the choice of course. A score of 213/300 and above in TOEFL is also accepted. Some Universities also accept Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (Grades A or B). Most postgraduate applications have to be referred to Faculties and may take 6 weeks to process.

How to get visa after acceptance?
If your application for study is successful, you will be sent a letter offering you place at the University and detailing the first fee payment due. When you return your acceptance of the offer and make that first payment to the University, an electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (eCEO) is sent to the Australian diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate etc) you have nominated in your application form. A paper copy of this electronic Confirmation of Enrollment is sent to you. You then submit your copy of the eCEO to the nominated diplomatic mission when you apply for a student visa.

Cost and Fees
Tuition fees vary from AUD 6000 to AUD 7000 for a six-month graduate certificate course to over AUD 30000 per annum for a medical degree. Most full time degree and post graduate degree cost between AUD 10000 to 20000 per annum. In vocational education and training, costs vary from AUD 3000 to 4000 for a 20-week certificate course to over AUD 12000 per annum for laboratory or computer intensive advanced courses. The Australian government requires that international students and their families pay for health insurance in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Scheme. Health care costs in Australia can be quite expensive. The cost of health insurance may be around $300 for a single person.

Now New Zealand interests desi students

Among the emerging educational destinations for Indian students, New Zealand is definitely among the most popular. “The interest is very high and growing steadily. In fact, we have now started a second annual New Zealand education fair in India to address the needs of students here. This will be targeted at the July intake of our universities which is largely for undergrad students,” says Paul Vaughan, trade commissioner New Zealand Trade & Enterprise. In fact, January 2006 saw an incredible 79% increase in student visa applications at the high commission in New Delhi. “New Zealand as an education destination is seeing tremendous growth and India is an important market for us. Our aim is to propel this momentum through platforms like New Zealand Education fairs, which allows a direct and detailed dialogue between universities and students,” Graeme Waters, the NZ High Commissioner, says. In fact, Education New Zealand now plans to appoint counselors in India, since it has become such an important market. While, during the past six years over 5,000 Indian students have studied in New Zealand, the annual rate of increase in the intake of Indian students at New Zealand institutions has been about 35%. A couple of significant changes in New Zealand’s student immigration policy last year have worked out very well for students from India and have resulted in the growing popularity of NZ. Firstly, foreign students can now remain in New Zealand for six months after they get their degree to look for work. This open work permit visa for six months is an innovation that is in keeping with international standards. In bringing about the change, Education New Zealand, the body that provides leadership in international education, has not just interacted with industry but also tracked global market realities. The other important change has been in the area of extension of opportunities for part-time work for international students, in terms of both hours and eligibility. The hours of part-time work now allowed has been increased to 20 hours weekly, from the earlier 15, for international students. These steps to ease student visa norms show that immigration policy is being fine-tuned to attract high-quality international students to the country. While there is a significant demand for qualified professionals in New Zealand, foreign students who get a job permit for two years after a course also gain additional points in terms of migration. “There’s greater awareness about the changes in India now since they have been in effect for over a year. Both the changes are in the area of jobs and students from India have been getting good job offers in New Zealand. This is what has put us among the most popular educational destinations,” Vaughan said. The other area which is now attracting Indian students to New Zealand is PhD. Last year New Zealand removed the international fee rates for foreign PhD students who now pay the same as domestic NZ students. “In one year, we have seen the number of PhD students from India at NZ universities, which is a dramatic increase. The other programme which is very popular and makes education in New Zealand very attractive for Indians is the option for the spouse to work. So, while the husband/wife enrolls for an educational programme the spouse gets a permit to work. Under this programme we see a large number of double applications from couples,” Vaughan adds. Significantly, in some niche areas such as biotechnology, forensic science and marine engineering, degrees from NZ are acknowledged as world class. Under the new rules, international students may apply to work up to 20 hours in any given week, rather than the previous restriction of 15 hours per week. International students undertaking a course of 12 months or more may apply to work full-time over the summer holidaysStudents in years 12 and 13; eligible English language students may apply to work up to 20 hours in any given week. Students graduating from a two-three year diploma, degree or post-graduate qualification will be eligible for a six-month open graduate job search work permit. This allows them to search a job relevant to their qualification. Once they have received a job offer the six month work permit will be extended to the length of their job offer. Most graduates are eligible to apply for NZ permanent residence in their first two years of work in NZ providing they meet the qualifications and other criteria inline with NZIS. International students, who have graduated from a course that would gain points under the skilled migrant category, may also apply for a six-month open work permit. Eligible students’ partners may apply for a work permit, valid for the duration of the partner’s study course. While the educational standards in NZ are high and there’s international recognition for most undergraduate and post-graduate courses globally, the multicultural society is an added attraction for Indians. Institutions offering courses in areas such as food & diary technology, plant science and horticulture, hospitality and hotel management, nursing, viticulture, forestry and sports management are very popular. Most courses offered by such institutions are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. A recent educational fair in India had representatives from as many as 21 prominent educational institutions in New Zealand participating to provide counseling to parents and students eager to pursue their studies there. “MBA and hotel management courses are very popular in India with students in NZ being able to avail themselves of internationally accepted placement programmes,” Vaughan says. In New Zealand, tertiary education providers are innovative and provide programmes that are internationally recognized. Tertiary institutions provide flexible pathways between different levels, which are an avenue that Indian students can look for when considering their options. Such institutions must be signatories to the ministry of education code of practice for the pastoral care of international students. Qualification from recognised Indian universities is also accepted in New Zealand. All the six universities of New Zealand, institutes of technology and polytechnics and private education providers are keen on tapping the Indian market. Private institutes in NZ offer various courses ranging from hotel management to plumbing and can fill in skills gaps for Indian students. Mainstream universities offer courses in areas like business studies, engineering, IT and computing, food and dairy technology, plant science, horticulture, hospitality and hotel management.
